Examples of Elaboration
|
EXAMPLE OF ANALOGY: This example shows how two different pieces of information connect to each other through comparison. For example, for the the category of "Geography", "Chicago" and "Illinois" are paired together. "Denver" and "Colorado" are also paired together. The connection based on the order of the presented information is that both "Chicago" and "Denver" are state capitals of "Illinois" and "Colorado" respectively.
EXAMPLE OF ILLUSTRATION: An illustration is meant to better explain information through the use of pictures and sometimes words. With this example, if an elementary school student was learning about the parts of the body and was able to read, this picture with labels helps learn and process the information well. The lines connecting the words to the picture help ensure that the information is stored efficiently and accurately.
EXAMPLE OF MNEMONIC: A mnemonic device uses two unrelated topics to connect information together. The unrelated topics grouped together actually increase effectiveness of connecting information and improving memory. In this example, the acronym "HOMES" is used to help remember the 5 Great Lakes in the United States. Though the word "HOMES" and lakes have nothing in common, a relationship is still created to help remember.
